I can see the issue you are experiencing with form M1PR and we are looking into it. I would recommend that you print and mail in your state return without the M1PR form. If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software. It was confusing and now I have to filed an amended form!

Head over to the Federal income tax forms page to get any forms you need for completing your Federal Income Tax return in April. This will take you back to the 2021 online tax return. Click on State on the left side of the online program screen. Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) is at the very end of the state return, after the questions about penalties, extensions, etc. Look for a page titled “Other Forms You May Need”. (screenshot attached) That will take you through the section for the renter’s credit.
When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state. Never saw the Print M1PR button and was not asked to enter banking information to receive the credit. There is a $5 fee charged for third-party return requests.
Go back in to your account (You might need to click add a state to get back in but you do not really have to add a state unless you did not even prepare a MN return)—and finish preparing the state forms. @lydiaswan When you prepared your 2020 return did you prepare a 2020 MN state return? If so, then the M1PR was available to prepare within the state program–but you have to print it and mail it. If you need certified copies of your returns, you must either check the appropriate box on Form M100 or request it when you contact us.

If you believe you are eligible based on the requirements listed above, then you can amend your return to revisit this area in TurboTax or file this form online through the State of Minnesota. To obtain the refund, the taxpayer must have a CRP, Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP), for each rental unit lived in during the year. The taxpayer’s landlord is required to deliver a completed CRP to the taxpayer no later than January 31st of each year. Minnesota Department of Revenue provides automatic translation for our website (revenue.state.mn.us) into Spanish, Somali, and Hmong, using Google Translate. Please remember, the English language version is considered the most accurate.

In any case, TurboTax needs to be updated to better guide the user through this process. As I stated in my original post, it wasn’t clear if the M1PR was eFiled or not and only found how to do it by going back in to the Filing section. It is located somewhere near the very end of the list of MN forms.

- Seems to be a glitch in the software for filling out the Minnesota Property tax refund form.
- There is no one who doesn’t want to have good friends.
- It skips right over the regular refund and only asks about the special refund.
I was very satisfied with my federal & state tax preparation BUT disappointed that the software would not correctly compute the MN Property Tax Refund. Since I did not qualify for the “Special Refund” it said I did not qualify for a Property Tax Refund at all. I have done this form for years & I know for a fact that this is WRONG. Further, I see when I Google the question that this has been a problem in years past & has gone unfixed. Now I need to file MN property tax instead of Turbo tax did it as I paid for it.
@Enriquesanchez4 If you did not file a federal and state return using TurboTax for 2020 you are not going to be able to file just the 2020 renters credit using TurboTax. That had to be done as part of preparing a 2020 state return AFTER you prepared a 2020 federal return. Not even sure if it is too late for you to get it for 2019, but if you prepared 2019 using TurboTax you can try—–but you cannot use online software now. You have to download the CD/download for 2019 to prepare any sort of 2019 forms. You might be better off just getting the forms from the state website and filling them out by hand to mail.

Check the first box and follow the onscreen instructions. Please see Filing for a Property Tax Refund for more information. The instructions at Can I file my M1PR (Minnesota Property Tax Refund)… (intuit.com) are out of date for 2020 and I did use the feedback link on that page to say so and to ask that TurboTax also be updated to better guide the user through and make it clear how to eFile the M1PR. In my case that second time was after the Federal and State returns were accepted. I don’t know if that needed to happen first or if you could just do it right away.
Seems to be a glitch in the software for filling out the Minnesota Property tax refund form. It skips right over the regular refund and only asks about the special refund. You have to go to the form within TurboTax and fill it out manually. This also requires you to go to the Minnesota Revenue website to look up the tables for the numbers you need to enter.
Minnesota has multiple mailing addresses for different tax forms and other forms of correspondence. Make sure you send your completed tax forms to the correct address – some forms may have a different mailing address specified in the form instructions. Towards the end of the step-by-step interview for Minnesota you will reach the Other Forms You May Need screen. The current tax year is 2024, and most states will release updated tax forms between January and April of 2025. Tax professionals may request copies of tax returns for their clients with a valid Power of Attorney. If you need copies of federal tax returns, complete and send federal Form 4506 to the IRS or get a tax return transcript through their website.
